Positions available in the Comai lab

Bionformatician

Genomic variation discovery

Background

We are engaged in genomic and genotypic analysis involving Illumina GA next-generation sequencing for discovery of polymorphisms, mutations and for rapid mapping of plant genomes. The bioinformatician will interact with bench molecular biologists and other bioinformaticians to maintain, improve and develop discovery and analysis tools. The position requires a minimum of half time commitment. The position represents a unique opportunity to develop leading expertise in a fundamental and growing area of genomic analysis. The Comai laboratory is a leader in mutation discovery and consequences of genomic copy number variations

Requirements

  1. interest in sequence analysis, comparative genomics and genetics
  2. familiarity with the UNIX environment, and a programming language such as python, or perl, or C++
  3. good interaction and presentation skills

Education and compensation

The position can be tailored from advanced undergraduate (assistant IV) to graduate research associate, to postdoctoral researcher, with salary commensurate to the position. At the postgraduate and postdoctoral level the opportunity exists for independent research in the general area of the position. Contact: For consideration email Luca Comai providing a curriculum vitae, and a statement of career or research objectives.

Undergraduate lab interns and workers

We often have positions available, both for academic credits and for compensation. Depending on the position and expertise of the student, responsibilities will range from helping lab staff with experiments, to laboratory maintenance, to field work, to independent research. Please submit a cover letter briefly describing your objectives (why are you looking for a position and what you expect to gain from it), resume and contact information to Luca Comai. Request of internship for credit will be addressed rapidly and you should hear from us in two weeks. After we get inquiries for employment we circulate the file and evaluate the applicant or file the inquiry for future consideration depending on the needs and opportunities available in the laboratory. While we would like to keep each applicant informed of their status, we typically only contact you to schedule an interview. If you do not hear from us in a couple of weeks, assume that your application has not been successful for any of multiple reasons. In a quarter or so, if you are still looking, send us your application again.

Postdoctoral positions in plant genetics and genomics: hybridization and polyploidization

Postdoctoral positions in the genetics and genomics of plant interspecific hybridization and of polyploidy are available in the Comai laboratory located in the UC Davis Genome Center. The laboratory studies the effect of hybridization and polyploidization on gene regulation using the model arabidopsis, QTL mapping, developmental analysis, transcriptome analysis and leading-edge technology such as new-generation sequencing. The ideal candidate will have a recent Ph.D. in Genetics, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology with a track record of strong productivity. Familiarity with bioinformatics is desirable. Please submit a cover letter briefly describing research interests and career goals, curriculum vitae, reprints of 2 publications, and names and contact information of three references to Luca Comai.

Postdoctoral position in plant functional genomics: TILLING

A postdoctoral position in genomics is available in the UC Davis Genome Center TILLING laboratory. The laboratory specializes in the discovery of mutations and polymorphisms in populations using new-generation sequencing and is developing leading technology and applications. The postdoctoral researcher will provide leadership in the development and optimization of methods for discovery and analysis of mutations, will have a recent Ph.D. in Genetics, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology, a strong record in the development and execution of complex procedures involving nucleic acids characterization and analysis. Familiarity with bioinformatics is desirable. Please submit a cover letter briefly describing research interests and career goals, curriculum vitae, reprints of 2 publications, and names and contact information of three references to Luca Comai.
