Research

The Comai Lab is in the Department of Plant Biology and the UC Davis Genome Center. One part of the laboratory studies how chromosome number and type affect gene regulation, development and genome evolution. Our model systems are Arabidopsis thaliana and rice. The other laboratory part is adapting next generation sequencing to a functional discovery tool called TILLING. We are developing methods and services to efficiently find mutations in genes of interest in rice, wheat, tomato, and tetraploid Arabidopsis. Click on the research links below to find out more.

Isabelle Henry et al. report that while most aneuploids of Arabidopsis thaliana are fertile, different aneuploid chromosomes are inherited with varying efficiency. This chromosome-specific behavior is most likely dependent on endosperm-embryo responses to the dosage of specific gametic factors. The paper appeared in Heredity.

Daniela Pignatta et al. report that when Arabidopsis thaliana becomes autopolyploid relatively few reproducible changes occur in the transcriptome, while frequent changes can be found in enhancer traps. In the image, expression of a GFP enhancer trap is activated in flowers by transition from diploidy to autotetraploidy. The paper appeared in the New Phytologist.
